'Queer' isn't an offensive word, necessarily. I live in DC where 'queer' is generally considered acceptable. Myself and a lot of my LGBTQ friends self-identify as queer rather than 'lesbian' 'gay' 'bi' because it's a more of an umbrella term for 'alternative' sexualities. I understand that there are still a lot of people who would be offended by the word queer but it's important to understand the context in which it's being used.

I totally get what you’re saying. It’s definitely a matter of who is saying it & why & in what context just like the N word (which they use in Mean Girls, also). Like the way you & your friends use it is totally cool but when I hear it, it’s usually because someone is playing a video game at my house & you can hear other people on their mic screaming & calling each other “queers” in a derogatory way for blowing them up. In the Cady Heron/Mean Girls spectrum, I’m leaning towards that she definitely didn’t mean it as a compliment.
